A Food and Agriculture Organization report on the State of Food Insecurity in the CARICOM Caribbean for 2015 revealed that Caribbean countries imported USD $4 billion in food annually – a 50 per cent increase over figures recorded in 2000. Imports were expected to increase to USD $10 billion by 2020 if current efforts to enhance food production are not successful in addressing this rising problem. To this end, Victory Gardens was established with a focus of equipping the church and by extension the nation at large to contribute and aid in a significant way in the reduction of our ridiculously high food import bill which currently stands at about 800 million. Our vision is to facilitate the training and development of 1000 gardens within the next 4-5 years. We want to see a wide cross-section of persons in our nation begin to utilize their backyards, front yards, urban spaces, rural lands, church lots and community gardens in crop production and animal rearing, inclusive of fish farming. We have a desire to see our people have physical, social and economic access to sufficient safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life. Victory Gardens also has a vision of empowering our nation to be victorious in a number of areas including the following: 1)Victory over our high import bill. 2)Victory over unproductive or waste land in our country. 3. Victory over food insecurity. 4.)Victory over a lack of foreign exchange. 5)Victory over unhealthy eating. 6) Victory over lack of exercise in a fast-paced world. 7) Victory over lack of income-generating opportunities for some urban households. 8) Victory over a consumerism lifestyle that helped to get us here. 9) Victory over non-communicable diseases. 10) Victory over the loss of community life and neighbourly interaction.
